How to Check Your BVN and Link Your NIN to Your SIM Card (2026 Complete Guide)

Two Numbers Every Nigerian Needs to Know

There are two numbers that follow you everywhere in Nigeria's financial and telecom systems. One is your BVN (Bank Verification Number). The other is your NIN (National Identification Number). You need both. You probably have both. But if someone asked you to recite either right now, there is a good chance you would stare at them blankly.

This guide covers how to retrieve both numbers and how to link your NIN to your SIM, which the Nigerian Communications Commission requires for every active SIM card in the country.

How to Check Your BVN

Your BVN is the 11-digit number that links all your bank accounts to your biometric data (fingerprints, photograph). Every Nigerian with a bank account has one. You enrolled for it at your bank, probably years ago, and then immediately forgot the number.

Method 1: USSD Code (Works on Any Network)

Dial 5650# from the phone number registered with your bank account.

You will receive an SMS with your BVN. The service costs about ₦20, which is deducted from your airtime.

Important: This only works from the phone number you used when you opened your bank account. If you have changed your number since then, you will need to update it at your bank first.

Method 2: Your Bank App

Open your bank's mobile app. Most banks show your BVN somewhere in the profile or account details section:

  • GTBank/GTWorld: Profile, scroll down to BVN

  • First Bank: Menu, Account Details

  • Access Bank: My Accounts, tap on your account number, BVN is listed

  • UBA: Profile Settings

  • Zenith: Account Info

  • Kuda: Profile, scroll to BVN
  • Method 3: Visit Your Bank

Walk into any branch of any bank where you have an account. Bring a valid ID. Ask the teller for your BVN. They will verify your identity and provide it. This is the slowest method but works if your phone number has changed and the USSD code fails.

What if My BVN Is Linked to an Old Phone Number?

You need to visit your bank branch with:

  • A valid government-issued ID (NIN slip, voter's card, international passport, or driver's license)

  • Your old SIM (if you still have it)

  • Your new SIM
  • The bank will update the phone number linked to your BVN. This is a same-day process at most banks. Once updated, 5650# will work from your new number.

    How to Check Your NIN

Your NIN is a different 11-digit number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Unlike BVN (which is for banking), NIN is for everything: SIM registration, government services, passport applications, voter registration.

    Method 1: USSD Code

Dial *346# from the phone number you used during NIN enrollment.

Your NIN will be displayed on screen or sent via SMS. This works on all networks.

    Method 2: NIMC Mobile App

Download the "NIMC Mobile ID" app from the Play Store or App Store. Log in with your NIN and the phone number you registered with. Your NIN and a digital ID card are displayed in the app.

Method 3: Check Your NIN Slip

If you still have the green slip that NIMC gave you when you enrolled, your NIN is printed on it. Most people have lost this slip. That is normal.

Method 4: Visit a NIMC Office

Go to any NIMC enrollment center with a valid ID. They will look up your NIN using your biometrics. Be prepared to wait. NIMC offices are not known for speed.

This is the part that causes the most confusion. The NCC requires every SIM card to be linked to a valid NIN. If your SIM is not linked, the network can restrict or deactivate your line.

How to Know if Your NIN Is Already Linked

Dial *996# on any network. If your NIN is already linked, the system will tell you. If not, it will prompt you to enter your NIN.

You can also call your network's customer service:

  • MTN: 180

  • Airtel: 111

  • Glo: 121

  • 9mobile: 200
  • Ask them to confirm whether your NIN is linked to your SIM.

    Common Problems and Fixes

"NIN not found" error when dialing the code
Your NIN may have been enrolled under a different phone number. Dial *346# from the phone you originally registered with to confirm your NIN, then re-link it using the codes above.

"Linking failed" or no confirmation SMS
The NIMC database and the network's database sometimes take 24-72 hours to sync. Wait 48 hours and check again via *996#. If it still shows unlinked, visit the network's service center.

    "Maximum SIM limit reached"
You can link a maximum of 8 SIM cards to one NIN. If you have 8 already linked and need to add a new one, you will need to deactivate an old SIM first. Visit the network's service center with your ID.

BVN and NIN are different numbers? Yes.
BVN = Bank Verification Number. 11 digits. Issued by your bank. Used for banking.
NIN = National Identification Number. 11 digits. Issued by NIMC. Used for identity, SIM linking, government services.

They are separate systems. You need both. They do not replace each other.

Why This Matters for Your Phone Service

If your NIN is not linked to your SIM, the NCC can instruct your network to:
    1. Block outgoing calls
    2. Restrict data access
    3. Deactivate the SIM entirely

This has happened in waves since the original 2020 directive. The deadlines keep getting extended, but the enforcement is real. If your line suddenly stops working and you have not done anything wrong, the first thing to check is whether your NIN is linked.

Take 2 minutes right now. Dial *996#. Check. If it is linked, you are fine. If not, link it using the codes above. It is free. It takes 60 seconds. And it prevents you from losing access to your phone number, your bank app (which is tied to your phone), and every service that relies on OTP verification.
