How to Check Your Electricity Meter Number Online in Nigeria (All DISCOs Covered)

The Token Won't Load Without a Meter Number

You open a VTU platform at 11 PM. The power just went out, your meter is screaming "CREDIT LOW," and you're ready to buy a token. Except: where exactly is your meter number?

It's a 11-digit number. It's usually on a sticker on the side or back of the meter box. The sticker is sometimes faded, or your landlord plastered it behind the circuit breaker panel, or the meter is installed in a locked outdoor cabinet three floors below you.

This guide covers every legitimate way to find your meter number and account details — without going outside at midnight.

Method 1: On the Meter Itself

Physical prepaid meters in Nigeria typically display the meter number in one of two ways:

  • Printed on a sticker affixed to the front or side of the meter casing. Look for an 11-digit or 13-digit number, sometimes labelled "MSN" (Meter Serial Number).

  • Displayed on the screen. Press "07" or "Enter" on the meter keypad. Some Hexing and Conlog meters cycle through information screens including the MSN when you press a specific combination.
  • Meter BrandKey Combination to Show MSN
    Hexing07 then Enter
    Conlog65 then Enter
    Landis+GyrHold "i" button 3 seconds
    Mojec00 then Enter
    EDMIPress "Next" until MSN shown

Method 2: Your Previous Token Receipt

Every legitimate electricity token receipt contains your meter number. Check:

  • SMS inbox from your bank or last payment platform

  • Email from your DISCO's payment portal

  • Paper receipt from a DISCO customer service centre
  • If you have any old token, the 20-digit token number encodes your meter number within it — but decoding that requires your DISCO's internal tools, so it's not practical for self-service.

    Method 3: DISCO Customer Portal

Each DISCO runs its own portal. You can log in or register, then retrieve all account details including meter number, arrears (for postpaid), and current tariff band.

Method 4: DISCO Customer Service Line

Call your DISCO's call centre and provide your full name plus the service address where the meter is installed. They can retrieve your meter number from their records in minutes. Have a government-issued ID ready.

    Method 5: Ask Your Landlord

If you rent and the DISCO account is in the landlord's name, they should have the meter number on the original installation documents. Request a copy of the sub-meter installation certificate or the original service connection letter.

After You Have the Meter Number

Once you have the number, you can:

  • Buy prepaid tokens instantly. Enter the meter number on vtyield.com/guest/electricity, pick an amount, pay, and the token arrives on screen and via SMS in under 60 seconds. This works for all DISCOs listed above.

  • Check available credit. Press "00" + Enter on most Hexing and Landis meters to see your remaining kWh balance.

  • Set a credit alert. Some DISCO portals let you register your phone number to receive an SMS when your prepaid balance drops below a threshold.
  • One More Thing: Keep That Number Somewhere Sensible

Save your meter number in your phone contacts (name it "My Meter Number") or take a photo of the sticker and save it to Google Photos. You'll thank yourself the next time you're buying a token at 11 PM in the dark.
